1. Common Nouns







































Common nouns are means shared by persons, places, and things of the same kind or class.

2. Proper Nouns

Proper nouns are names given only to specific persons, places, and things.  The word proper means private or one’s own.  Proper nouns must be written with a capital letter at the beginning.

3. Concrete Nouns 

Concrete nouns are the names of things which have form, shape, size, weight, color and solidity.  Concrete nouns can be seen, touched and smelt.

4. Abstract Nouns 

Abstract nouns are usually names of some quality, action or state.

5. Countable Nouns 

Countable nouns are the nouns that can be counted.

5.1 Singular countable nouns
      
      (a) Use an for the words beginning with vowels: a, e, i, o, u.
                  
                 e.g. an ant
                       an elephant
    
     (b) A silent 'H'     
               e.g.  an hour
                


5.2 Plural countable nouns

Column A refers to singular Countable Nouns.  Column B shows that there are plural nouns.

6. Uncountable Nouns
Uncountable nouns are nouns that cannot be counted. 
Do not add –s to an uncountable noun.

7. Collective Nouns


A collective noun refers to a number of, a group of, or a collection of persons or things      considered one. 

       e.g. an army of ants
              a tribe of baboons
